So I shared with you where we stayed at the JAG Hotel in St. John’s Newfoundland and now for the super exciting Gatherall’s Puffin and Whale Watch! The weather was absolutely amazing the day we went, the sun was shining much warmer their St. John’s Newfoundland average temperature. That said don’t be fooled! When that boat gets going on the open ocean it can get chilly so bring a sweater!
The tour was absolutely amazing! Being right downtown with no car it was so great that Gatherall’s offers a shuttle pick up and drop off, plus our driver was amazing and so knowledgeable about Newfoundland and it’s history.
When we arrived at Gatherall’s they have this huge big blue building that overlooks the ocean. This building is full of the cutest souvenirs including wine glasses with the colourful row houses that I just loved. The staff in the souvenir shop was so wonderful and excited for all the guests about to board the ship.
As soon as you get on the boat the staff on the boat were wonderful! They immediately introduced themselves and went about taking us on a tour of their beautiful ocean, singing songs and creating a great feel good environment.
We started by going to take a look at the puffins, which at first when you see a few puffins diving across the ocean I was thinking ok, there are a few. I had no idea that they would take us to a huge island absolute full puffins and so many species of birds. I took photos below so you could see how many lined the walls of the island and were flying above us.
The absolute best tip which thankfully I did not experience was if you are going to look up at the birds just keep your mouth closed.
After going past the birds & puffins we were onto the whales. This again shocked me at how close and how many Whales we were able to see. I felt so happy that I just happened to have my camera when I saw my first whale which was so so so far away! Little did I know that we were going to get much closer to them or that there would be so many.
When we got to the spot the boat stopped we were really close but at a comfortable not disrupting the whales distance. I snapped so many photos and loved seeing them blow from their blow holes & dive down so I could see their tales go under. It was so excited when they actually even came closer to us even though we were at a stand still. I also happened to have my camera up and got video of the whale diving down and his tail which was my favourite part.
The tour was 90 minutes and I highly highly recommend Gatherall’s Puffin and Whale Watch! I loved seeing the staff take interest in my kids asking there about their trip and singing for the whole boat. Down below they also had a bar open where I got to enjoy Iceberg Beer which was really good, which means it was really really good because I don’t even like beer.
I just love this tour and would have gone again if we had just 1 extra day! It was such an experience that I will never forget.
Thank you Gatherall’s Puffin and Whale Watch for such an amazing experience.
