Signal Hill Picnic – St. John’s Newfoundland

Picnic on Signal Hill in St. John's Newfoundland - What to do

Picture being at the top of the most amazing hill over looking the harbour as boats sail in and out in the bluest of water. The day is sunny with just a touch of clouds and the perfect amount of breeze too cool off the warm sun as it kisses your skin. At the top of this hill you are sitting on the cliff surrounded by your family sitting on a plaid picnic blanket. The cafe you just left gave you the most delicious latte to enjoy with your view plus a picnic bag full of goodies for you and your family. That was our day when we decided to head to Signal Hill in St. John’s Newfoundland and get a picnic from the Newfoundland Chocolate Company cafe at the top of the hill.

We had the most amazing time enjoying the view, sitting down as a family to eat, talk and decide if we should tackle the next big hill and climb up to Bowsers Castle AKA Cabot Tower. The picnic was provided by the Newfoundland Chocolate Company and was so delicious! We were able to order online here for our sandwiches in advance so when we arrived all they had to do was grill the panini’s and we were on our way.

They provide a super cute plaid picnic blanket for you to decide which spot is your perfect picnic location and just return it when you are done. The meals came in these super cute bags that convert to back packs, which of course the kids loved. Everyone picked their sandwich of choice, enjoyed the most delicious chocolate cookie baked fresh, a bottle or water or juice for the kids. For dessert you get your choice of Gelato or a specialty hot chocolate, we of course all picked the gelato… but I could go for another latte, that was delicious!

Once the picnic was done it was time to hike up to Bowsers castle! It’s amazing how excited the kids were to get to battle Bowser. PS we never said it was Bowsers castle they came up with that all on their own, we just didn’t disagree lol. It really did look like it. The hike up took only 15 minutes but the view at the top was so worth it! There are plenty more hiking trails to spend hours walking with a view and seeing the waves crash.

For a little history, Signal Hill was the place were signalman perched and looked over the ocean for ships headed toward the port of St. John’s. Flag signals flown on the hill communicated the names of arriving ships to those who inhabited the harbourfront below.

On the way back down we were lucky to see the re-enactment of military drills performed by the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. It was quite a sight to see them all dressed in uniform and listening to commands.

Our Signal Hill picnic was such an amazing experience that we all as a family enjoyed. It really made us realize how much we enjoyed taking the time to have a picnic as family and will actually be having on on our way to Kelowna for our next trip!
